New Scientist Senses special: The art of seeing without sight

New Scientist Senses special: The art of seeing without sight - Features
Kennedy put Armagan through a battery of tests. For instance, he presented him with solid objects that he could feel - a cube, a cone and a ball all in a row (dubbed the “three mountains task”) - and asked him to draw them. He then asked him to draw them as though he was perched elsewhere at the table, across from himself, then to his right and left and hovering overhead. Kennedy asked him to draw two rows of glasses, stretching off into the distance. Representing this kind of perspective is tough even for a sighted person. And when he asked him to draw a cube, and then to rotate it to the left, and then further to the left, Armagan drew a scene with all three cubes. Astonishingly, he drew it in three-point perspective - showing a perfect grasp of how horizontal and vertical lines converge at imaginary points in the distance. “My breath was taken away,” Kennedy says.

Time moves ever on…

Another weekend, another list of things that didn’t get done. All in all, had a good time. Angelique didn’t work this weekend, so having her around was very good. Saw Miqel for a bit on Saturday, discussed things deep and neurologically stimulating as is our wont. Gave him the Raw Like Sewage CD, asked for a contribution (More on this in a few days). Went and ate dinner with our friends Jason, Lindsay, Paul, Kelly and Emma. Had a wonderful time with them, as always.

Now here we are on Sunday, and I have about 15 tracks that need to be mastered, a whole new wing that needs to be added to the website, an introduction to the collaborative project I’ve been on about… Wonder how much of that is going to get done tonight, eh?

Sighgroanahh.

Exhausted. Work was long and boring, but isn’t it always. Had a great evening - Mr. Natural came over and he and the boys and I hung out. Great fun discussing plans for the near future while I mastered a live recording from his recent trip to Italia. As is to be expected, John’s Rock-N-Roll lifestyle caught up with him, forcing him to make an impromptu trip to the Left Coast. More on that as it develops.

While getting ready the Sewage Treatment material, realized I already had 15 peices in various states of completion, (nearly) ready to post along with the source materials. It’s different in a lot of ways from the material I’ve performed recently - much more atmospheric and drone-oriented. Can’t wait to use some of this stuff in a live context - maybe I can bridge the gap. Can’t wait to get it all online - a goal I’ve set for myself for the weekend.

Glad to see visitors to the page - and thanks to everyone who has registered so far. Don’t be bashful. In the meantime, got a great invite from DJ B to visit the Mixdown on the 6th. Those of you in Nashville can tune in that morning around 11:15 to get the skinny on Sewage Treatment, or you can stream it from the Mixdown webpage.

In the meantime, it’s time for me to get my axxe to bedd.

PS: New Autechre in April.

NASA: Day of Remembrance

I was going to wait until later to post about this, but today is the 38th anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire, and NASA’s official: Day of Remembrance for the crews of Apollo 1, STS 51-L (19 years ago tomorrow) and STS-107 (2 years ago next Tuesday). Writing this in a period when the Shuttle still hasn’t returned to flight, it is important to remember that the ISS is still operational (and just completed an EVA) and the US manned space program is an ongoing effort.

Turned up while goofing off

gl0tch | done data like shedding skin - An IDM/glitch community that I stumbled upon. Haven’t had a chance to listen to any of their tunes yet, but their graphics are nice.

By the way, I found this site by stumbling upon William Fields’ blog. He’s got a bunch of tunes as well - go check ‘em out!

Eh? What? Yeti?

Yeti, indeed. I had hoped to bring you more music tonight, but mastering got in the way.

I had hoped to bring you more blabber tonight, but the telephone got in the way.

I did speak with Michael tonight. He’s one of the coolest, most unique people I know, and I hadn’t talked with him for some time. Sometimes I do that, but he was as incommunicado as I was - so I don’t feel so bad. Check out his site, though. It’s good stuff.

I’d like to encourage everyone to register - post if you want to. At this point, I think that would be cool. I’ll have more music up in the next day or so.

Found While Cleaning…

Two new/old Logickal tracks… Recorded live on the Mixdown (Thanks, DJ B!) back on October 10 2003, just before the Buzz & Click show. These were a couple of tracks I was working on for that show that I pulled for time/feel reasons. They are Excozer Flow and The Clock Shines 11.

Enjoy!

Kryptos

Wired News has an article on Kryptos, everyone’s favorite unsolved cryptological sculpture. Worth a read if you’re not familliar with the piece, but also some good links to an interview with sculptor Sanborn and Ed Scheidt, who assisted Sanborn with the cipher. For further info, make sure to check out Elonka’s page dedicated to the structure and John Wilson’s head-scratcher of a page as well.

Purpose Songs…

After a converstation I had last night, I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit more about what I’m trying to do with the blog. The main purpose is to serve as a central point for news and info regarding my artistic output via Offnominal/Discrepancy. So, as I complete and release new material - I can post it here first. I’m thinking that monthly I might post open topics from time to time in order for everyone to post info regarding upcoming shows, releases, links… what have you. In addition, I’ll post links, info and ramblings when the opportunity presents itself.

Additionally, there’s the collaborative aspect that I want to explore… More on this soon.

NAMM Lust, part 1

Well, the WinterNAMM session is under way, causings lust in the heart of every gearslut…. First of all, Ableton (one of my favorite software manufacturers in the world) has released an integral FM/subtractive synth to Live called Operator. $150 seems a little steep, considering that’s more than the upgrade to Live 4, but I’ll have to play with it to decide.

Also, Native Instruments has apparently announced Kontakt 2 with all kinds of bells and whistles. This one is even more expensive - and I’m not entirely sure I’ll have the CPU to push the new features.

On the hardware side, my gearlust was fully stoked by… The new Korg OASYS (Coolest feature? The return of Wave Sequencing and Vector Synthesis). I’ve been drooling over this concept since they originally announced it forever and a day ago. Will it be able to compete in today’s software-centric market? Will they out-Kurzweil Kurzweil by pricing it like it was a Rolls-Royce? We shall see…

Edit: The answer to the above question is yes. Apparently it will list for somewhere in the $8,499 range. Not as pricey as the original Fairlights, but still in the range of an Emulator II purchased with 1987 dollars…

Winter Glimmerings

Okay, so here we are - another year, another blog. I know that my track record with blogging is spotty at best, but this time - oh yes, this time will be different. I promise. Really.

Anyway, I know there’s a ton of stuff to do around here. Some spiffy webdesign for the template is a must. Eh, what was that? When will I get around to doing that? Is that a trick question?

In the meantime, keep an eye on this spot for some new music, in the form of a long-term, multi-user collaborative/remixing project. Interested? Stay tuned.

Greets!

Welcome to the new WordPress-based blog of logickal/offnominal. I’ll be using this site to comment/pontificate/ramble/rant about things in my remixed-up world. Oh, and I’ll likely also use this to announce/link to new artistic output.
