Slashdot | Algorithmic Political-Media-Mashup Vodcast
Sounds and images of U.S. and World leaders and commentators are algorithmically fragmented, distorted, and recombined into a media tapestry. New episodes are defined by a time period: audio and video sequences are constructed only with materials collected during this period, lasting from days to weeks.”

Open Source meets Final Frontier

ONLamp.com — The Software of Space Exploration
It is not just these internet entrepreneurs who are bringing changes to the space community. NASA and other space agencies and organizations have been adopting the tools and processes of the internet to change the way they conduct missions and how they collect and analyze data. For example, NASA has released software to the open source community and has also used existing free and open source software for its own missions. This article surveys some of the most interesting software being used for space exploration.

Apple Patents Virtual Surrond Sound System

Macsimum News - EU Patent for Apple audio system, loudspeaker & method of operation
The audio system has a pair of real speakers (SL, SR) and three virtual speakers (SC, SLS, SRS) that are set around a listener (Z). The listener can enter offset parameters (LD) using a hand held unit and relating to a screen. The system processor then determines the virtual speaker locations so that the listener is positioned at the sound sweet spot.

Episode 24 - Ableton Forum Tracks

This week it’s an array of tracks found via the newly reorganized Ableton Live user forum. As you probably know, Live is one of my two main production environments here at Shabby Road, and every episode of the podcast to date has been mixed with this wonderful piece of software.

When I first read the product announcement for version 1 in Keyboard Magazine that included some off the wall description of it being a sequencer that played like an instrument, I knew I was going to love this piece of software. Shortly thereafter, I picked up a copy and have been a Live advocate ever since. It really has done more to open up my creativity than any other tool I own.

So, while we’re all working on the public beta test for version 5.2, I decided to finally go through some music that other Live users are posting and found a slew of great tracks, which I mixed up for this week’s listening enjoyment. As always, if you want to have some of your music featured here, drop me a line and let me know where to find it!

Falcon I Failure, first analysis:

Elon Musk had some new information quoted over at his brother’s blog regarding yesterday’s failure

However, at T 25s, a fuel leak of currently unknown origin caused a fire around the top of the main engine that cut into the first stage helium pneumatic system. On high resolution imagery, the fire is clearly visible within seconds after liftoff. Once the pneumatic pressure decayed below a critical value, the spring return safety function of the pre-valves forced them closed, shutting down the main engine at T 29s.

It does not appear as though the first stage insulation played a negative role, nor are any other vehicle anomalies apparent from either the telemetry or imaging. Falcon was executing perfectly on all fronts until fire impaired the first stage pneumatic system.

Falcon I Failure, but new Mars Image

Sad news for private space wonks - the maiden flight of SpaceX’s Falcon I was apparently a failure. Not much info yet, but Elon Musk posted the following to spacex.com -

We had a successful liftoff and Falcon made it well clear of the launch pad, but unfortunately the vehicle was lost later in the first stage burn. More information will be posted once we have had time to analyze the problem.

Watching the onboard camera, it does look like there is something flapping in the breeze, as it were. I think they were using insulating blankets for thermal control before launch, which could cause some fairly serious aerodynamic issues if they didn’t separate properly. However, the vehicle appears to be fairly stable although it’s obviously performing some pitch and roll maneuvering before there is a very brief flash. The LV very suddenly departs controlled flight, impacting with the ocean seconds later. No one ever said rocket science was easy - here’s hoping they get a handle on it and get back in the saddle as soon as they can.

Happier news from the Red Planet tonight, as Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter returned its first test images today. Check out this detail image, at a 2.49m/pixel resolution. Good stuff, can’t wait for more!

Back to your regularly scheduled electronic musicks later this weekend…

Episode 23 - AndrewDukeSounds, Cagey House and Wavespan

Greetings, fellow Travellers - Here’s this week’s podcast! Made some tweaks to my Ableton Live DJ template over the past couple of sets, and things are grooving a bit better for me… Anyway, the group project over at mnml.nl using Andrew Duke’s sound packs has come to an end, and the majority of this set is a mix of the submissions. I followed that up with some more of Cagey House’s Eno meets Herbie after darkisms off of his new full length, and some great ambient space dub style joints from Wavespan. Go give these folks some love and let them know where you heard it!

Oh, also - this is the first episode published using the new PodPress plugin, giving me all kinds of nifty controls, and giving you a built-in player for the podcast right here in the post - let’s see how this works!

Andrew Duke Mix Project - All tracks can be found at Soundclick
Chimorph - Eradion
Leon Neon - Untitled
CJ Tari - LaTarea2
Hapax - Piscolabis

KSC Safety Stand-Down

Yesterday, KSC center director James Kennedy ordered a 2 hour safety stand down, halting work on Shuttle and ISS processing. From his videotaped message to center employees:

However, our past does not guarantee future success. In the last few weeks alone, KSC has experienced a rash of close calls and mishaps leading me to call for a two-hour Center-wide Safety Stand-down.
Let me give you some specific examples that led to this decision.
First, during an orbiter jack transfer, an unexpected movement of Endeavour’s nose landing gear occurred. This incident could have resulted in major damage to the Orbiter. Next, we inadvertently overpressurized Atlantis’ Water Coolant Loop, resulting in damage to the water accumulators.
Then, in less than a seven-day period, we had three more incidents. We damaged Discovery’s robotic arm while moving the bridge bucket, which will require removal and replacement of the arm.
Next, an X-ray film container was dropped onto a body flap tile on Endeavour, which will require repair. Finally, workers started a small fire during roof repairs to the VAB, the consequences of which could have been catastrophic.
These incidents were experienced by several different organizations on Center and there is no apparent common cause. However, I considered all a threat to successfully accomplishing our mission – the launching of astronauts and payloads into space.

Update: An anonymous KSC worker comments on this stand down over at Nasawatch:

All these happened before the launch date was moved to July. We have been pushed pretty hard by management to make the May date. A lot of people here have been working long hours for a long time. But the good news (according to our managers) has been that there is no schedule pressure.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Update 2 - From Chris in the comments:

The only real pressure I’ve ever seen at work is in the orbiter’s tires. ;)

Priceless!

In work…

After a couple of weeks dealing with the funk (the respiratory type, not the P-type) things are getting swinging again around here. After taking stock of the scraps, bits and itchy snippets scattered about Shabby Road, I find the following projects shaping up:

  • A series of dronescapes laced with minimal glitchiness, using a lot of FM synthesis.
  • Another series of abstract peices sourced entirely from sounds taken from spaceflight - from the typical magnetosphere-based ambiences to extreme twisting and warping of radio communications and the sounds of large rocket motors doing their thing.
  • A related piece to the above concepts involving multimedia, perhaps music + a multi-part peice of fiction mediated and presented via WP involving the existential angst of a spacecraft’s AI. Possibilities for collaboration abound.
  • An esoteric exploration of a very famous rock record from 1971 that I won’t name here. Hopefully Hippocamp won’t beat me to this one before I can get it out.
  • A strange smattering of peices involving the chance meetings of guitar, physical modeling synthesis and convolution reverb.
  • All the while, I have some finished pieces floating around that sound a little like this one (called Uphill) that I completed for Andrew Duke’s project over at mnml.nl that I’ve mentioned before, and this one (Little Fingers On The Triggers, featuring Ryne on processed vox) submitted for consideration for a comp for Experimedia.

All of these are in the pipeline to receive release, but the exact methods thereof are yet to be determined. I will likely shop at least a couple of these around for label release, some for net.labels, and some just available here. I would like to get myself to settle down and provide some posts dealing with practical techniques and experiments, and possibly some further group remixing projects. In the meantime, I’ve got a new episode of the podcast completed - but I’m going to make you wait until this weekend to hear it.
Okay, back to work…

Google Mars Now Online & STS-121 News

Have fun exploring the Red Planet! Now, what would be cool is to have links to some of the Spirit/Opportunity imagery directly from the maps.

In other news, word is that ET-119 has a faulty Liquid Oxygen Vent/Relief valve, on top of the Engine Cut Off sensor issue. I’m going to join the group that thinks that a July launch is pretty much a given at this point.

Update: Looks like the ultrasound results are in, and they found a 1.25″ crack in the RMS caused by a bridge bucket hit. Ouch. Florida Today says that if they launch in May (unlikely), they’ll use Endeavour’s arm. Otherwise, this arm should be back in time for a July launch.

Upgraded!

Yep, looks like everything went fine. All of the software used to run the blog was updated to their latest versions yesterday, plus I took a few minutes and added a new header graphic to the blog, as well as a graphic for the podcast on iTunes. I don’t think anything will be broken for anyone, but please let me know if you find anything that doesn’t work!

Upgrading

Ok, if you’re one of the .5 people who likes to hit the site at 10am CST on a Sunday, you should be aware that I’m in the middle of upgrading Wordpress and the associated plugins I run. I’ll keep everyone posted!

Update - 10:54A - So far, so good. Most everything seems to be working. We’ll see if this fixes the strange posting behaviour I’ve seen around here recently. Also just installed Podpress, an awesome-looking podcasting tool… Can’t wait to get that all worked out!

Episode22, Part I - Project 168

Okay, folks. I know you’ve all been waiting patiently for me to get my head back above water and get some more glitchy electro goodness hooked onto the RSS feed. Well, your wait is over - this week, your special treat for being such kind listeners is the first ever multi-part FlightDynamics episode! “How’s this?” I hear you ask…

Well, I’m sure you all remember the Project168 deal I mentioned over and over a few weeks ago. Well, I put together a roughly 100-minute mix of some of the tracks that jumped out at me during my initial listens. Rather than flood your podcatchers with the whole mix, I’ve split it into three smaller chunks, which I’ll be posting over the next few days. Here’s the tracklist for this first 30 minutes…

Grinning Ape - Hooks That Don’t Hang Towels
Kid Static - Sex Panther
Between Cathedrals - Winter Mistrals
Fgmcvp - Joman
Cyn - Sunday 5 Am
Chris Moss Acid - Last Step Acid
William S. Braintree - Hello My Name Is William
New City 16 - Silk
Onandon - I swam700 miles to reach you yet you still draw away
Lucid Rhythms - Hookah Lounge
Techne - Dub Ya

In the interests of pimping my own contribution (since I didn’t include any tracks in the mix itself), you can go find it over at the Project168 pages or download it directly from here

I also want to take a moment and thank our neighbors from the south, R_Garcia and The Secret Life for coming up here and laying it down for us Nophi-style. They know how to bring it.
