Episode 29 - Tranquility Lakes

I know it will probably shock you, but this episode of the podcast continues the Ableton love fest that you’ve seen around here the past couple of days. I don’t know why you’re acting so surprised - every episode is created in Live in the first place! Anyway, given all of the news from the past couple of days, I figured it was appropriate.

Last month, Robert Henke (a.k.a. Monolake and one of the chief conceptualists behind Live) posted to the forum about an hour of generative ambient music that he had created to test some of the new Live features…

…. cannot resist to post this here.

I made a follow action track as a sound source for testing some new
functions in Live. A collegue who heard it said i should record an hourand put it online. So i did. . . .
I cannot put the set online since it has been creared with an interim
version of Live and it will not open with Live 5. It is nothing special.
Six tracks running operator plus reverb, a beat repeat, some filters.
The MIDI clips contain one single note and there are all triggered by
follow actions with different timing. The tracks look like this:
Clip > Random> Scale > Operator > EQ > Reverb and
two tracks Random > Chord > Scale > Operator > Reverb.
one send is Reverb > Beat Repeat

Needless to say, it was a very smooth slab of chillout, complete with FM drops, reverb washes and the like. After listening while pondering his post (and realizing that there were probably bits that couldn’t be replicated using Live 5), I thought it might be fun to play around with a set based on his description - then, I thought it might be fun to replace the Operators in the device chain with a Simplers - loaded with clips taken from his original piece.

Things progressed steadily, although I’ll admit that the initial results weren’t all that spectacular. A few more days pass and another track is posted, and my methods begin to stray from the inital concept into freeform ambient mixing marathons that were then moved to the side in order to prepare for the upcoming gigs.

The other day, I noticed that Robert was online on the forums, so I asked him if he minded if I included his tracks along with mine in an episode of the podcast and he readily agreed. So, permission in hand, I began to comb through the Logickal permutations to see what might work, then polish it all off with a nice relaxing chillroom DJ style set to mix it all up.

None of these tracks have titles, but the playlist is:

Monolake Generative Ambient 26062006 ->Logickal 2606 Permutation 5 -> 2606 Permutation 2 -> Monolake Generative Ambient 06072006 -> Logickal 0607 Permutation 1

Thanks to Robert Henke for putting the original tracks up for download and for allowing me to impose myself on his sounds.
