Google.org launched some incredible KML recently that describes potential geothermal energy resources in the United States. This presentation utilizes the Google Chart API. Read about this effort or view this presentation in Google Earth.
This KML is both very slick and very effective. Be sure to play with the settings in the Places panel to see 3D depictions, energy resource depth and animations. Each chart icon opens a placemark balloon that provides additional information about geothermal resources in the given state.
What a great weekend… I know there are a few people waiting for me to post the screencast of my presentation at the Nashville Ableton User’s Group, but it DEFINITELY needs some editing. I also need to render off my set from Ombi Friday night. In the meantime, here’s a treat for everyone. Motivated by the length of time he can spend in his unarirconditioned office, Chris Randall over at Analog Industries challenged us to create a track in under 10 minutes, from soup to nuts. Inspired by Friday’s sessions, I ended up going through the process twice, creating screencasts of each one. In fact, a lot of the things I covered in the user’s group meeting are demonstrated here as well. I should note that it should be a given that I want a copy of their new plug in, Automaton.
So without further ado, I present two off-kilter hymns to last night’s full moon: Fullmoonskeever and Fullmoonmachines.

Nashville area robots: Tomorrow (Friday 8/15) I’m going to be out on the town doing a couple of events! First off, I will be presenting at the Nashville Ableton Live User’s Group at SAE starting at 6PM. I’ll be talking about using Live for performance from DJ-based sets to total sequencing improv. I’m thinking about also delving into some Racks/Drum Racks/Slicing fun.
Afterwards, I’ve been invited to do a set at Forward>>, taking place at 10PM at Ombi on Elliston Place. I was originally planning to do a DJ set, but the flyer says I’m doing a performance, so I might be going all out… There’s no cover, so be there!
In the meantime, here’s a bit of music for you… CDM wrote up a bit on a newish Mac-based generative music application called Nodal. My friend Vlad at Daevlmakr.com turned me on to this some time ago, and I tinkered a bit. I’ve not had the time to get incredibly deep, but I was prompted (via Twitter) to go back and play around a little bit more. This piece was created with Live, where Midi clips were created from the output of Nodal, with a little bit of Follow Actions thrown in for good measure. Hope you enjoy it…
Olympics bring no joy for Tibetan monks 1 day ago | Tibetan Uprising
“We can’t get email until October after the Olympics,” said one monk out of earshot of the mainly Han Chinese tour groups.
“The Olympics?” said another monk.
“We wouldn’t be able to go and watch them as the train station will not sell us any train tickets, so I don’t really care.”

Another set of meditations, this time reflecting on the troubled relationship between Tibet and China, an expression of protest against the Chinese regime and the world’s complicity in refusing to truly hold China responsible for their actions.
The chants of Buddhist monks and the sounds of temple gongs and bells were convoluted, chopped, gated and re-contextualized into a minimal house format. The contrast between the subject matter and the chosen style might seem incongruous, but it follows on the concepts I took away from Winter Music Conference 2008 - explore the use of the “disposable music” that is modern techno to convey something more meaningful than simply acting as soundtrack to a nighttime’s revelry.
I hope you enjoy the music. Remix stems are available - please contact me if you wish to contribute a remix to a future release.
This should be unbelievable, but it’s totally in character for them. If there is one company in the US whose employees need to be unionized, it would be Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is mobilizing its store managers and department supervisors around the country to warn that if Democrats win power in November, they’ll likely change federal law to make it easier for workers to unionize companies — including Wal-Mart.
In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.
Of course, this is all due to the Employee Free Choice Act, and the article certainly makes it seem like the corporation is trying to use scare tactics against their employees to encourage them to vote Republican because, if Obama is elected they “won’t have a choice” if they unionize or not.
Despicable.
