The Ultimate Machine

via Scott Horton at Harper’s

There is something unspeakably sinister about a machine that does nothing, absolutely nothing-except switch itself off.

RIP Sir Ed…

Edmund Hillary, First on Everest, Dies at 88 - New York Times
Sir Edmund Hillary, the lanky New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who with Tenzing Norgay, his Sherpa guide, won worldwide acclaim in 1953 by becoming the first to scale the 29,035-foot summit of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday in Wellington.

He was 88.

Wired: David Byrne and Thom Yorke on the Real Value of Music

Everyone should read this:

But it was really good. It released us from something. It wasn’t nihilistic, implying that the music’s not worth anything at all. It was the total opposite. And people took it as it was meant. Maybe that’s just people having a little faith in what we’re doing.

Too true

Everyone should definitely read this: Matt Jeanes is right on, and he brings his customary humor to it as well.

See the jaded way that Pitchfork writes about things that they LIKE and you’ll see how easy it is to get cynical about that perceived desperation on the other end of every package that comes with a note that says “please love me.” Being a small label or an unsigned artist often feels a bit like being that pimply, fat dude with mismatching clothes who asks the class president and cheer team captain to the prom. You know you have almost no shot, but you go for it anyway because fuck, you believe in yourself and you see that she has a Ramones sticker on her 3 Ring Binder and that has to count for something, right?

Nashville Scene - The Spin

Someone made it out to Buzz and Click and made it just in time to make part of my set…

The lone laptopper, clad in a shirt and tie, toyed with various other gadgets generating soundscapes of blips, glitches, pops and crackles with a clutter of crunching and jumbled beats that occasionally locked into a discernible groove, only to crumble back into sonic rubble.

Wish I Was There

Rolling Stone : Led Zeppelin: The Full Report From David Fricke

This one was rehearsed, ready and out to kill. This band was Led Zeppelin in every way.

To all those who are too highbrow for Zeppelin… Lighten up. This is ROCK AWESOMENESS.

Jump (in pitch)! « RW370

And now, this moment of levity from Vanhalen « RW370
Thanks to Warmowski, via CDM

So what happens when you’re Van Halen, the last song in your set list is the million-seller “Jump” with its synthesizer-keyboard opening…and the recording you’re using to play back the synth is accidentally run at 48K instead of 44.1K?

On The Radio

Going to be on the radio tomorrow morning talking about Twelve Offerings and playing another mix of the tracks on the Mixdown, thanks to our good friend John Brassil. I’ll be on 91.1 WRVU around 11:30 - you can tune in via the stream if you aren’t in town. If you miss it, there’s an archive in case you have a desire to hear me ramble on about my projects.

Count me in as a “Skyful Liar”

Thanks to Reason for this, by way of The Tricycle Blogs

China Bans Reincarnation Without Government Permission - The Huffington Post
In one of history’s more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is “an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation.”

Ultimate Galactic Dragon Gyroball Pitch Power Explosion

Still not able to get interested in Baseball this season, but this Onion article is hy-sterical:
“Boston fans are the greatest fans in the world,” Matsuzaka told reporters through an interpreter upon being asked if he had left Japan out of fears that his Ultimate Galactic Dragon Gyroball Pitch Power Explosion might split Mount Fuji, strike the rising sun from the sky, and awaken the wrathful atomic lizard Gojira. “I’m very happy and excited to be a member of the Red Sox.”

Fountain Pens

My dad will appreciate this… I really want one of these Waterman Kultur student fountain pens.  Maybe the Montblancs when I grow up.

Firedoglake: Feeling Pensive

Our Man Fitz

Sydney Schanberg with the New York Observer gets it, and spells it out to anyone that doesn’t:

Day by day, witness by witness, exhibit by exhibit, Patrick Fitzgerald, the prosecutor in the trial of Dick Cheney’s man, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, is accomplishing what no one else in Washington has been able to: He has impeached the Presidency of George W. Bush.

Of course, it’s an unofficial impeachment, but it will also, through its documentation, be inerasable. The trial record—testimony, exhibits, the lot—will be there, in one place, for investigators, scholars, reporters and Congress to pore over. It goes far beyond the charges against Mr. Libby. It is, instead, a road map to the abuses of power that Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney and their shadow government of neoconservatives have committed as the neocons carried out what they had been planning for years: an invasion of Iraq—and other military excursions—for the purpose of expanding American dominion.
