Tibetan(delayedre)action

Well, the distributors swapped tibetanaction with the next release on the schedule, so the new single has been pushed back to August 5. Now, the upshot of this is that I’ve got a bit more advance promo time. To make it fun, I’m going to hit various services with the promo announcement, starting with Twitter. If you’re a Twitter user, follow logickal (if you don’t already) and message me that you want some pre-release goodness. In a day or so, I’ll announce another social network you can catch me on and snag a URL and a password. So, I’ll see you around the interwebs and we’ll have a blast, ok? Ok!

Updated: Ooops, I forgot to mention - I’m only going to give out 4 copies per social network. Just for fun, the first two people to email me with the subject line “Free Tibet” will get a link. Sound good? Let’s go!

Update July 23: Okay, four links have been sent to Twitterfolk - that actually went quicker than I expected! Which social network gets next?

Flight Dynamics 043 - World Tibet Day

In celebration of the 73rd birthday of Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, today was observed as World Tibet Day. I could ramble on and on about the need for the world as a whole (and the West in particular) to hold China accountable for their many human rights violations, of which the struggle of the Tibetan people is only a part. I will refrain from ranting, and instead offer this podcast of a live remix I performed today of Chantaction, which will see release on July 22, on the 4-track Tibetanaction single.

Logickal Live @ Buzz and Click IV

Now available from iTunes Music Store - Logickal’s live set from Nashville’s finest electronic music showcase, Buzz and Click, back from 2006. It should hit other services over the next few days…

20080115 - Ground Fog / Crossed Swords

Recorded by Logickal the morning of Saturday, January 12, 2008. Improvisation built entirely from triggered sine-wave synth notes that begin the piece, permutated using Live’s Sampler instrument and Follow Actions. Featuring a cameo appearance from some of the Daevl.Plugs for good measure. The structure of the piece flows through the permutations in a fairly linear manner.

20080105 - Dream for the year…

Original take recorded Jan 1 2008. Permutated twice on Jan 2 and Jan 3. Mixed in reverse chronological order.

May All Beings Be Happy.

Episode 41 - Season’s Greetings

In a little over 15 minutes local time, it will be Xmas. So, from me to all of you - here is an improvised Carol, a subliminal hymn. It may be a little darker in tone than the usual “Peace on Earth,” but you know that is implied. The Solstice just passed means our days will start getting a little longer, even though it’s bound to be colder still.

Enjoy - if I don’t talk to you sooner, have a happy new year!

Nashville Scene - The Spin

Someone made it out to Buzz and Click and made it just in time to make part of my set…

The lone laptopper, clad in a shirt and tie, toyed with various other gadgets generating soundscapes of blips, glitches, pops and crackles with a clutter of crunching and jumbled beats that occasionally locked into a discernible groove, only to crumble back into sonic rubble.

Episode 40 - Logickal Buzzes In, Clicks Out

Some of you may recall that this past weekend was the fifth installment of that annual festival of the Nashdiggity’s finest electronic noise, Buzz and Click. A wonderful time was had by all… thanks to all of the other performers for putting on such great sets.

It is my normal custom to record all of my sets - unfortunately, this night I was most of the way through my set before I realized I hadn’t started recording… So, I present to you a compilation of rehearsal takes made on Friday and Saturday (12/7 and 12/8), closing out with the last 8 minutes or so from the Buzz and Click performance itself.

Twelve Offerings hit the Big Time

Just to give everyone the heads-up… Twelve Offerings is now available on iTunes Music Store (and iTunes Plus) and Beatport. Unfortunately, I cannot include personalized donation messages for sales via these services, but all proceeds will be donated regardless. If you’ve been waiting for one of these services to carry it to donate, now is the time (although buying the CD directly will prove to be a bigger donation).

Logickal presents Twelve Offerings

I would like to introduce Twelve Offerings, the newest release by Logickal. It is dedicated to the people and Sangha of Burma, the monks who peacefully led protests against the ruling Junta on the country before being suppressed. All proceeds of this release will be given to The U.S. Campaign for Burma.

UPDATE: Twelve Offerings is now available from iTunes Music Store (and iTunes Plus) and Beatport. Unfortunately, I cannot include personalized donation messages for sales via these services, but all proceeds will be donated regardless.

On The Radio

Going to be on the radio tomorrow morning talking about Twelve Offerings and playing another mix of the tracks on the Mixdown, thanks to our good friend John Brassil. I’ll be on 91.1 WRVU around 11:30 - you can tune in via the stream if you aren’t in town. If you miss it, there’s an archive in case you have a desire to hear me ramble on about my projects.

Episode 38-Global Day of Action

Today was the Global Day of Action for Burma. If you’ve been following the blog for the past couple of weeks, you might have picked up on the fact that I’ve been following the protests in Burma rather closely. As it happens, I’ve been recording material over the past two weeks, and am preparing a CD release in the next few days to support the Burmese people in their struggle to gain freedom from the oppression of the military dictatorship that has ruthlessly suppressed the peaceful demonstrations led by the Therevada Buddhist monks over the last weeks. I can’t stand with them directly, and have little to offer - but all proceeds from this release will be donated directly to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.

In this podcast, listen to a short mix of selections from the upcoming release Twelve Offerings to Burma. Please check back in the next few days for information about ordering this release and contributing to a worthy cause.

Logickal in the mix on Proton

Thanks to DJ Chloe for including Lullabye 43 on a recent set on Proton’s B-Sides show… Go check it out there, or maybe even here.

Attention, New York City! I need your help!

Hi everybody - sorry if you’re getting tired of seeing me crosspost this all over the internets…

It looks like Logickal and 3kStatic are going to be heading back to NYC for the RemixHotel NY event between May 18-20, and I’m trying to see if there’s anyone in the area with an open performance slot at a show, (house) party, art gallery, etc. on either the 18th or 19th in order to maximize the trip up from Nashville. I have a feeling that the RemixHotel performances will be pretty aggressive and beat-oriented, so it would be very nice to fit in a more esoteric/atmospheric set somewhere over the weekend, although any and all opportunities would be great!

If anyone has anything going on, please drop me a line and let me know - I’m aware that it’s pretty last minute, so many thanks in advance for even the smallest lead or tip!

Logickal treads the 5 Way Path

A few moons past, I was asked by the Daevl.Master to participate in an experiment dreamed up by Blue Deceiver and Martin Spernau involving composition with a stringent set of parameters: all sounds had to be sourced solely from a set of five original samples. No additional instrumentation, synthesizers, what have you. I, having a particular fondness for these kinds of limitations, immediately agreed.

Well, the project is over and public now, and you can hear what I and 7 other artists and alchemists (including Sugarknife remixer and all around instigator BlueDeceiver) did with those five base elements by pointing your browser over to the DaevlMakr.com 5 Way Path page. All of the tracks are available to stream or to download, so it amounts to a nice little V/A compilation. If you’re interested in hearing what the sources were, or giving it a shot youself, the original sample pack is still available from this page as well.

I also have to echo what BlueDeceiver said about these tracks - it’s incredible how different they are from one another. To me, that’s a testament to the creative powers of the contributors - each artist’s path took those original 5 elements in some very different ways, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Episode 37 - Spring N2 Roundup

No, not really. But things have been so crazy recently, I finally got some time today to catch my breath… and even get the gutters cleaned. Anyway, with this episode, it only makes sense to cover the stuff that’s been keeping me busy, so… Enjoy!

RemixHotelMiami - Some Photographic Evidence

The lovely National Hotel, site of RHM…

…and the beautiful pool of the National. The MS suite was back about halfway down this photograph, on the left. Oh yeah, behind all the lovely foliage.

Taken on the Arthur Godfrey, looking North as we made our way to the inGrooves party…

…Which like all good parties should be, was held at a Mansion.

No, I wasn’t lying. I went on right after Lil Jon. I got this shot off while in the middle of getting set up. A few minutes later, I’d be simulataneously performing and answering Ableton Live questions from one of Lil Jon’s engineers. Fun stuff! Ask me more!

Anyone down Miami/WMC way can check 3kStatic 8pm on Thursday, Logickal at 7pm on Friday and JPunch (or perhaps an encore performance from 3kStatic) 8pm on Saturday at the National Hotel on South Beach.

Dancing with thee Daevl…

Some of you who have been actually reading this blog might recall a few mentions of the daevl.plugs collection released this Halloween. The brainchilde of musician/code wizard Vlad Spears, this is the coolest little collection of plugins I’ve run across in quite some time - full of esoteric sound bending capability, just the way I like it. I’m still working on the official review, along with a special episode of the podcast that will accompany it, but you can always visit the Daevl.Makr website and check the plugins out.

As a special added bonus, Logickal was chosen to be the first in a series of Artist features, which led to a very entertaining Q&A session and recording three tracks which prominently feature the plugins (Thanks, Vlad!). Has Logickal sold his soul to the Daevl?   You’ll have to ask the Gods of Rock.
So, head over there and join me as a Daevl in the Pale Moonlight!
