Create Digital Music » Archivist Responds: Yes, Virginia, Delia Derbyshire Really Was That Awesome

To this day, I have an enormous musical crush on Delia Derbyshire’s work. I simply CANNOT wait to be able to browse this archive, and if anyone involved in this planned project to commission new peices inspired by her work is reading - sign me up.

Create Digital Music » Archivist Responds: Yes, Virginia, Delia Derbyshire Really Was That Awesome

David Butler of the University of Manchester was one of two archivists who started undertaking the work of assembling a library of Derbyshire’s ground-breaking work. He writes in CDM’s comments that this is no BBC special effect: the recordings are very much real. He also clears up some of the confusion about their discovery, and offers more on the tantalizing cut “NOAH’s dance.”

Logickal presents Twelve Offerings

I would like to introduce Twelve Offerings, the newest release by Logickal. It is dedicated to the people and Sangha of Burma, the monks who peacefully led protests against the ruling Junta on the country before being suppressed. All proceeds of this release will be given to The U.S. Campaign for Burma.

UPDATE: Twelve Offerings is now available from iTunes Music Store (and iTunes Plus) and Beatport. Unfortunately, I cannot include personalized donation messages for sales via these services, but all proceeds will be donated regardless.

Apple Unveils Logic Studio

interface_gallery01_20070828.jpg
Apple - Logic Studio

Wow. Long overdue update… still trying to absorb this, but here are the salient points:
Logic Pro 8:

  • Consolidates all of the old editor windows into a clean new Arrange window. Looks nice - wonder how screensets are implemented, if at all?
  • Arrange features 2 channel strips - one for the selected track and another for the aux or output it’s currently routed to.
  • Spotlight-enabled file browsers for Plugins, presets, Apple Loops or any file on your system
  • Multiple takes grouped into folders for easy comping, similar to new GarageBand feature
  • Apple Remote compatability! Didn’t see that coming, but it makes sense.
  • Track setup simplified and streamlined - about time.
  • Support for CAF format “allows you to record extended-length projects of up to 6 hours at 96kHz”
  • Looks like some seriously enhanced editing features - transient selection and an auto-comping feature they call “Quick Swipe Comping.” Automagic xfades, I suppose.
  • OMG - NO MORE XSKEY!

Mainstage
A live performance instrument/effects rack device. Lets you use the Logic effects and instruments along with AudioUnits as a performance device, outside of Logic.

Soundtrack Pro 2
Glad they’re finally bundling this. About time

New Instruments? Nope. Looking more closely, it appears that EXS24 has a new editor (thankfully!) and Sculpture and ES2 have True Surround output.

New Effects
Delay Designer - Surround capable multitap with filter, pan and pitch on each tap.
They mention new modeled circuits for the compressors… Hmmm. Lots of Surround Sound capability here too… Space Designer in surround will be incredible.

6 DVDS of Apple Loops, EXS instruments and presets

All of this for $499, or $199 to upgrade from Pro… Wow. I’m still absorbing.

My birthday is next week - if anyone wants to know what to get me and the iPhone is out of your price range, this is a real good start.

2007 Atlanta Laptop Battle

2007 Atlanta Laptop Battle

It’s fusion of sound design, composition and stage performance, and a chance for laptop musicians to prove their skills in battle and develop techniques and strategies.

The 2 Preliminary rounds are July 9 and August 13, with the top 4 from each going on to play in the final on October 19. Winner of the final goes to Seattle for the National Championship round, and there are gobbos of prizes to win. Go sign up now. Oh, and Logickal will be taking part in an exhibition match against another heavyweight in what should be a challenging Musickal Iron Chef Challenge.

Logickal treads the 5 Way Path

A few moons past, I was asked by the Daevl.Master to participate in an experiment dreamed up by Blue Deceiver and Martin Spernau involving composition with a stringent set of parameters: all sounds had to be sourced solely from a set of five original samples. No additional instrumentation, synthesizers, what have you. I, having a particular fondness for these kinds of limitations, immediately agreed.

Well, the project is over and public now, and you can hear what I and 7 other artists and alchemists (including Sugarknife remixer and all around instigator BlueDeceiver) did with those five base elements by pointing your browser over to the DaevlMakr.com 5 Way Path page. All of the tracks are available to stream or to download, so it amounts to a nice little V/A compilation. If you’re interested in hearing what the sources were, or giving it a shot youself, the original sample pack is still available from this page as well.

I also have to echo what BlueDeceiver said about these tracks - it’s incredible how different they are from one another. To me, that’s a testament to the creative powers of the contributors - each artist’s path took those original 5 elements in some very different ways, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Harmaline - More coming soon…

Jake Mandell

Big ups to The Witness Exchange for pointing out that one of my long-time IDM faves, Jake Mandell is still around and has released a boatload of music on his webpage.  Head over there and check it out, or wait a bit and I’ll feature some on the podcast!

Hey, Last.fm users…

Just a quick heads up to anyone who uses (even occasionally) last.fm - I’ve finally uploaded Krushjob to that service, so you can listen to the album via the last.fm player software, and have tracks streamed to you from their tag radios.  Some of the tracks are available for preview, so if you’ve been by here and haven’t checked it out yet, go listen to the little glitch LP that could, and maybe pick up a copy of your own!

Logickal Gets With The Counterprogram

counterprogam_promo.jpg

Thanks to mainman Dean Capone, I’m really pleased to announce that I will be performing as part of 3kstatic in July, on the 17th here in Nashville at The Basement and on the 20th in New York City at The Knitting Factory Old Office.  Also coming along are Jan Pulsford and Robert Bond - I’m supremely honored to be sharing the stage with all of these musicians.  If you’re in the neigborhood for either of these shows, come on down - They promise to be a lot of fun!

Cover me when I breathe…

So, Real World has a new site for remixers, appropiately called RealWorldRemixed. Besides having some very cool sample fodder there, they’re celebrating the addition of a new SSL console to Real World Studios by allowing us punters the chance to enter a remix competition. The track? Shock The Monkey by that guy who owns Real World and SSL. Those of you that know me can probably guess how much I’m looking forward to this, even if I’ve done it once already. Also, the chance to win a SSL Duende is pretty cool too. So, looks like in between everything else I’ll be working on some Monkeyage along with Andrew Duke’s remix competition.

Sax Solos

This saxophone player and I are in total agreement about the overall quality of the darkest age of the sax - the 1980’s. Check out his page for all the examples you’ll ever need.

Exquisit corps 6

I recently participated in the latest Exqisite Corpse musical collaboration game with a number of other very talented artists, and now the game is over and the songs and source files are available thanks to Sebastian, who served as facilitator and moderator of the game, as well as designer of the very novel website for viewing the results. Here’s how it worked:

This exquisit corps consisted of several rounds of development, a moderator was in charge of ensuring that the collaboration was done secretly.
Round 1: All participants secretly submited one word. This word was passed on to another participant as their initial inspiration.
Round 2 and 3 consisted of each person receiving two results from other particpants which they were placed in charge of to edit and remorph for resubmital.
The resulting sounds from round 3 [plus some wild cards] were then used to create the final songs you hear here. So in effect everyone made all the material, and everyone’s imprint in in everyones resulting songs. Hope you will enjoy moving through the evoliution of the sounds from initial word to resulting product.

Of course, I’ll likely feature a bunch of these tracks on this weekend’s podcast…

Idols at War

KoMoS Productions The Official Ken Scott Web Site

I guess it’s not surprising, but two demigods in Jeremy’s Mythology are having a little bit of a war right now. Ken Scott has a blog where he happens to be outlining some of the things he takes issue with in Geoff Emerick’s new biography… All that aside, I’m happy to see that Mr. Scott has a blog!

Simon Ready To ‘Surprise’ With Eno
Guest appearances include guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Steve Gadd and pianist Herbie Hancock, whose 2005 album, “Possibilities,” featured a new recording with Simon of the latter’s “I Do It for Your Love.”

In work…

After a couple of weeks dealing with the funk (the respiratory type, not the P-type) things are getting swinging again around here. After taking stock of the scraps, bits and itchy snippets scattered about Shabby Road, I find the following projects shaping up:

  • A series of dronescapes laced with minimal glitchiness, using a lot of FM synthesis.
  • Another series of abstract peices sourced entirely from sounds taken from spaceflight - from the typical magnetosphere-based ambiences to extreme twisting and warping of radio communications and the sounds of large rocket motors doing their thing.
  • A related piece to the above concepts involving multimedia, perhaps music + a multi-part peice of fiction mediated and presented via WP involving the existential angst of a spacecraft’s AI. Possibilities for collaboration abound.
  • An esoteric exploration of a very famous rock record from 1971 that I won’t name here. Hopefully Hippocamp won’t beat me to this one before I can get it out.
  • A strange smattering of peices involving the chance meetings of guitar, physical modeling synthesis and convolution reverb.
  • All the while, I have some finished pieces floating around that sound a little like this one (called Uphill) that I completed for Andrew Duke’s project over at mnml.nl that I’ve mentioned before, and this one (Little Fingers On The Triggers, featuring Ryne on processed vox) submitted for consideration for a comp for Experimedia.

All of these are in the pipeline to receive release, but the exact methods thereof are yet to be determined. I will likely shop at least a couple of these around for label release, some for net.labels, and some just available here. I would like to get myself to settle down and provide some posts dealing with practical techniques and experiments, and possibly some further group remixing projects. In the meantime, I’ve got a new episode of the podcast completed - but I’m going to make you wait until this weekend to hear it.
Okay, back to work…

Sounds from Andrew Duke - New Link and Competition

Andrew left a comment a few days ago in responce to my post regarding the sounds he was making available… I’ve been meaning to mention this for a few days, but better late than never! Here’s what Andrew said with some developments regarding those sounds he was sharing…

The links for samples have been changed, plus there’s a production contest
now using the samples; update:

A new round of the sound design/production class I’m teaching
(called Making Music With Computers by the college, thus
MMWC for short) starts tonight; focus programs are Ableton
Live and Native Instruments Reaktor; for the first two assignments
in the class, students have to mangle a limited pool of samples
using certain procedures; so that students use the same audio
starting point, I give them a bunch of samples I’ve made for
them to tweak. I’m also making these audio files (loops, hits,
some field recordings, etc) available to anyone else who wants to
use ‘em (links below). If you missed out on them the first
time I posted about this (they’re royalty-free), here’s the download info:
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment1audio.zip
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment2audio.zip
(Note: these are newly named zips; the old zip locations are no longer
valid).

Course info: http://andrew-duke.com/course.html

All I ask is that if you use of my samples in anything that you post a
link so
we can check out the results.

A production contest of sorts has been set up by one of the members
on the mnml.nl forum using the above samples I made; here’s the thread
if you’d like to read more and/or join in:
http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6802

Working on messing with the sounds myself… can’t wait to hear what you everyone does with them!
