20080115 - Ground Fog / Crossed Swords

Recorded by Logickal the morning of Saturday, January 12, 2008. Improvisation built entirely from triggered sine-wave synth notes that begin the piece, permutated using Live’s Sampler instrument and Follow Actions. Featuring a cameo appearance from some of the Daevl.Plugs for good measure. The structure of the piece flows through the permutations in a fairly linear manner.

Episode 41 - Season’s Greetings

In a little over 15 minutes local time, it will be Xmas. So, from me to all of you - here is an improvised Carol, a subliminal hymn. It may be a little darker in tone than the usual “Peace on Earth,” but you know that is implied. The Solstice just passed means our days will start getting a little longer, even though it’s bound to be colder still.

Enjoy - if I don’t talk to you sooner, have a happy new year!

Episode 40 - Logickal Buzzes In, Clicks Out

Some of you may recall that this past weekend was the fifth installment of that annual festival of the Nashdiggity’s finest electronic noise, Buzz and Click. A wonderful time was had by all… thanks to all of the other performers for putting on such great sets.

It is my normal custom to record all of my sets - unfortunately, this night I was most of the way through my set before I realized I hadn’t started recording… So, I present to you a compilation of rehearsal takes made on Friday and Saturday (12/7 and 12/8), closing out with the last 8 minutes or so from the Buzz and Click performance itself.

Episode 38-Global Day of Action

Today was the Global Day of Action for Burma. If you’ve been following the blog for the past couple of weeks, you might have picked up on the fact that I’ve been following the protests in Burma rather closely. As it happens, I’ve been recording material over the past two weeks, and am preparing a CD release in the next few days to support the Burmese people in their struggle to gain freedom from the oppression of the military dictatorship that has ruthlessly suppressed the peaceful demonstrations led by the Therevada Buddhist monks over the last weeks. I can’t stand with them directly, and have little to offer - but all proceeds from this release will be donated directly to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.

In this podcast, listen to a short mix of selections from the upcoming release Twelve Offerings to Burma. Please check back in the next few days for information about ordering this release and contributing to a worthy cause.

Episode 36 - dPulsified

So, it looks like dPulse is about to take a collective trip (and yes, there is an irony here, one that is spelled M$) - still waiting on some of the details, but posting this little mix of dPulse-style techno to keep the podcast feeds abuzzing. Anyway, let me know if you’ll be in Miami around the middle of March! In the meantime, work progresses on the new single… What? Huh? Single? Oh, and then there’s that other big thing on the horizon…

Ooops, Sorry…

Okay, so I upgrade all of the  blogostructure and I miss a little thing like resetting the directory that contains the podcast audio files.  Miss one little thing, and the whole kit and kaboodle jumps ship on ya.  Jeez.  Ok, well… it’s fixed now. Big, big, big, Ginormous thanks to Vlad for pointing out to me that things were broke in the first place.  Now back to yr regularly scheduled podcast…

Episode 35 - Daevl.Plugs and the LOEBT

I’m sure you remember the Daevl.Plugs - that incredible collection of soundmanglers I’ve been raving about for the last few months, developed by Vlad Spears from 2Second(fuse). I’ve been collecting tracks for a while from some of my fellow members of The League of Extrodianry Beta Testers, and now the time has finally come: a new episode of FlightDynamics! As befits the theme of the episode, I added a bit of additional Daevl.Processing to the mix, just for a bit of fun. Again, let me recommend to any other digital.musicians out there - run, don’t walk to Daevlmakr and purchase these plugins. Doktors, Aliens and Elder Gods agree - for $36, you absolutely cannot beat it.

I’ve recently been looking over the things that are on the horizon, and I’m VERY excited about some of the things getting ready to happen - not to mention a little overwhelmed! FlightDynamics might not hit the same levels of activity for a while - a new podcast a week is going to be hard for me to fit in, but fear not - stay subscribed, as we ain’t dead yet!

Edit - I’m incredibly remiss in not doing this earlier - A huge, glitchy thank you to the rest of the LOEBT for passing these tracks on (and Threv, sorry I missed you in this, but I think we’ll have something else cooking soon to make it up to  ya).   And thanks to Vlad for designing such an incredible suite of plugs for us manglers to enjoy!

Joshua Goran - A Credit’s Mind Unsung

Episode 32b - Happy Birthday to Me & Laconical Part 2

Yup - I’m 1/3 away from LP Age. Had a wonderful night out with my most favoritest people (at least those that are over the age of majority). Now rehearsal tonight and a short workweek before the trek to Florida for two 3kStatic gigs, opening up for none other than George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars in Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. Really looking forward to it, for obvious reasons! Also, going to see the new Depeche Mode concert film tomorrow at the local IMAX. Oh, and my remix of Andrew Duke’s Consumer v. User samples has netted me a prize of some kind - I didn’t make the remix release, but was a semi-finallist.  Thanks, Guys!

Busy times, but it’s the good kind of busy!

Oh, and before I forget - here’s the second half of Episode 32 of the podcast! More coming after I get back into town.

Episode 31

Welcome back! How have things been while I was away? Good? Great to hear it! Hope everything stayed under control … no alien invasions? No reactor meltdowns? Great news.

Well, NYC was an Odyssey in the most serious use of the term, but it was a totally awesome experience - Dean and I (along with Lilith, the new MacBook) braved the rigors of the road, a trip that ended up lasting almost exactly 26 hours. But, we made it to New York, and played the first ever 3kStatic gig in NYC at The Knitting Factory. You can’t get much better than that.

More 3kGigs coming up - we have Michigan coming up on Friday, plus some VERY interesting gig possibilities coming up for the Fall.

In the meantime, I had the opportunity this weekend to put Live 6 Beta back to work to get another FlightDynamics episode together! This latest version has a feature that will make putting the podcast together even easier, namely that you can now drag tracks from iTunes directly into Live under OS X. Apparently, Windows has had this feature for a while - glad we now have it over here on the Mac side!

The linup:
Dawid Szczesny - Stapes VI
Monohm - Collapsing
OCP - 4
Monohm - Arid Dictum
Royale - Game of Smiles
Wjoo.Joo.+ - The One I Love

Venutian Static and VI

This week, we come to you from the bleeding edge - caution was thrown into the wind and Live 6 beta 1 was used to produce the set. Aside from a couple of crashes, I made it through the other side with an episode in hand.

This week is also special because it saw the release of The Colors in the Wheel, the new album by our friends Venus Hum. Given the somewhat technical nature of this blog, I asked VHum member Tony Miracle (who has been featured here before with his minimal side project Satellite City) if he had any insight into the recording process he might be willing to share. He was gracious enough to give us the following to chew on:

i guess the thing to talk about from a tech angle would be theoverall technique/idea for the making of this record. we wanted tomake a really electronic sounding record, but by using no synths (you know, the standard oscilators and what not). instead we started with all acoustic sources (be it instruments, found sounds, whatever), then via computer editing and manipulation we morphed, warped, and mangled the sounds that you hear. the first track (turn me around) was built entirely of manipulated acoustic guitar.

for TURN ME AROUND i used ableton live to write the track, and a lot of the parts we put down quickly- like the chords, the ‘guitar percussion-hitting the back of instrument, ect…’, the counter melodies, and the basic arrangement. we later recorded a straight guitar part with a good mic/pre-amp/compression chain. for manipulation the source material i used the kitchen sink method of just chopping the gtr into microsecond samples, re-pitching and filtering. i used max + pluggo, reaktor, and the nord modular. everything eventually found it’s way to pro-tools for final editing and mix. logic might have been involved at some point too, but i can’t quite remember. this was a pretty typical method for most of the songs.

a couple tracks were recorded and finished in one version and then micro-sampled, chopped, and re-sequenced to make a new version (the 2 best examples are DO YOU WANT TO FIGHT ME? and YOU BREAK ME DOWN. the first version of those were pretty straight forward rock (FIGHT ME) and tom petty-ish folk (BREAK ME).

in general, there’s a lot of granular stuff going on- you can catch it if you’re wearing a pair of headphones.

Feeling inspired yet? If you enjoy it, The Colors in the Wheel is available from Nettwerk, and should be in record stores everywhere.

Following our Venus Hum portion of the set, I bring you a couple of tracks from Where’s Our Piece of the Groovy World by 3kStatic. If you’ve been frequenting this place for the last little bit, you’ll probably know that I’ll be performing as part of 3kStatic here in Nashville (at the Basement) on the 31st of July and at The Knitting Factory on August 5th. I thought to give a bit of a shout, since I’ve been working with all of these tracks anyway.

Winding the set up, we have a little example of the new Sampler instrument in Live 6. I took some elements from a couple of different attempts at working with Andrew Duke’s latest remix project and layered them together to give you a taste of Sampler’s power. The majority of the sound you hear is one rhythm loop having it’s looping parameters and filter modulated by various LFOs, with some judicious use of the FM modulation as well. The two pad sounds you hear come from two of his FX samples, given very short loops which I then modulated the position and length of with the modwheel and pitch bend. A little filter and a touch of reverb were added.

Of course, I’ll have more to share regarding Live 6 in the coming days and weeks. Also, I’ll have an announcement to make in the next day or so that might interest any of you in the Chicagoland area…

Episode 29 - Tranquility Lakes

I know it will probably shock you, but this episode of the podcast continues the Ableton love fest that you’ve seen around here the past couple of days. I don’t know why you’re acting so surprised - every episode is created in Live in the first place! Anyway, given all of the news from the past couple of days, I figured it was appropriate.

Last month, Robert Henke (a.k.a. Monolake and one of the chief conceptualists behind Live) posted to the forum about an hour of generative ambient music that he had created to test some of the new Live features… Continue reading ‘Episode 29 - Tranquility Lakes’

Also, thanks to everyone so far who has dropped their hard-earned entertainment dollar for a copy of Krushjob. It means a lot to me.

Episode 24 - Ableton Forum Tracks

This week it’s an array of tracks found via the newly reorganized Ableton Live user forum. As you probably know, Live is one of my two main production environments here at Shabby Road, and every episode of the podcast to date has been mixed with this wonderful piece of software.

When I first read the product announcement for version 1 in Keyboard Magazine that included some off the wall description of it being a sequencer that played like an instrument, I knew I was going to love this piece of software. Shortly thereafter, I picked up a copy and have been a Live advocate ever since. It really has done more to open up my creativity than any other tool I own.

So, while we’re all working on the public beta test for version 5.2, I decided to finally go through some music that other Live users are posting and found a slew of great tracks, which I mixed up for this week’s listening enjoyment. As always, if you want to have some of your music featured here, drop me a line and let me know where to find it!

Episode 23 - AndrewDukeSounds, Cagey House and Wavespan

Greetings, fellow Travellers - Here’s this week’s podcast! Made some tweaks to my Ableton Live DJ template over the past couple of sets, and things are grooving a bit better for me… Anyway, the group project over at mnml.nl using Andrew Duke’s sound packs has come to an end, and the majority of this set is a mix of the submissions. I followed that up with some more of Cagey House’s Eno meets Herbie after darkisms off of his new full length, and some great ambient space dub style joints from Wavespan. Go give these folks some love and let them know where you heard it!

Oh, also - this is the first episode published using the new PodPress plugin, giving me all kinds of nifty controls, and giving you a built-in player for the podcast right here in the post - let’s see how this works!
