Episode 23 - AndrewDukeSounds, Cagey House and Wavespan

Greetings, fellow Travellers - Here’s this week’s podcast! Made some tweaks to my Ableton Live DJ template over the past couple of sets, and things are grooving a bit better for me… Anyway, the group project over at mnml.nl using Andrew Duke’s sound packs has come to an end, and the majority of this set is a mix of the submissions. I followed that up with some more of Cagey House’s Eno meets Herbie after darkisms off of his new full length, and some great ambient space dub style joints from Wavespan. Go give these folks some love and let them know where you heard it!

Oh, also - this is the first episode published using the new PodPress plugin, giving me all kinds of nifty controls, and giving you a built-in player for the podcast right here in the post - let’s see how this works!

Episode22, Part I - Project 168

Okay, folks. I know you’ve all been waiting patiently for me to get my head back above water and get some more glitchy electro goodness hooked onto the RSS feed. Well, your wait is over - this week, your special treat for being such kind listeners is the first ever multi-part FlightDynamics episode! “How’s this?” I hear you ask…

Well, I’m sure you all remember the Project168 deal I mentioned over and over a few weeks ago. Well, I put together a roughly 100-minute mix of some of the tracks that jumped out at me during my initial listens. Rather than flood your podcatchers with the whole mix, I’ve split it into three smaller chunks, which I’ll be posting over the next few days. Here’s the tracklist for this first 30 minutes…

Grinning Ape - Hooks That Don’t Hang Towels
Kid Static - Sex Panther
Between Cathedrals - Winter Mistrals
Fgmcvp - Joman
Cyn - Sunday 5 Am
Chris Moss Acid - Last Step Acid
William S. Braintree - Hello My Name Is William
New City 16 - Silk
Onandon - I swam700 miles to reach you yet you still draw away
Lucid Rhythms - Hookah Lounge
Techne - Dub Ya

In the interests of pimping my own contribution (since I didn’t include any tracks in the mix itself), you can go find it over at the Project168 pages or download it directly from here

I also want to take a moment and thank our neighbors from the south, R_Garcia and The Secret Life for coming up here and laying it down for us Nophi-style. They know how to bring it.

Episode 21 - Experimedia

Sorry for the delay in posting this. Between everything else that’s going on, I managed to contract the respiratory illness that’s made its way through every member of the Offnominal household. Bedridden for days, I’ve propped myself up into a nearly-vertical position in order to make this post. All of these tracks come from the ever-so-worthy Experimedia netlabel, who host an excellent site with an active messageboard and links to many other members of their extended net.label family.

Fieldtriqp - young
Tibbar - Scabies Are Rad (Noh Mix by Nobushige Hirotsugu)
Jbible - Echo11
Dissolved - Buried Weavers

Episode 20 - Project168 Trax

As I may have mentioned before, there’s tons of stuff going on right now… In the meantime, here’s a new podcast for you all! Since I recently participated in the latest Project168, I thought now would be a good time to highlight some tracks from the earlier projects. If you didn’t know, Project168 is a challenge to musicians (yes, mostly electronic) to compose an EP release in exactly 1 week (168 hours, hence the name). There is an enormous amount of good music to be had by visiting http://www.project168.co.uk - this podcast only barely scratches the surface (and officially takes the record of longest episode at 41′01″).

From what I understand, the third edition will almost double the amount of music available - look for the third installment (including Logickal) sometime before the end of the week.

Dead Eros - When We Are Ghosts
3 - Volver a la Vida
Fgmcvp - Ya Se Escondio Remix 2004

Episode 16 - Xmas with the Lowlife

This week, a special set featuring music thanks to Thorsten and the rest of the crew over at Highpoint Lowlife Records. We start things off from a seasonal perspective with a few selections from their Christmas compilation Looking Back Ain’t No Way Forward from last year - then we follow that up with a nice meaty chunk of a liveset from Fisk Industries. As always, I advise everyone to head on over to their site to get more tunes. By all means, indulge yourself on the free net.releases they have on the downloads page, but after sampling these wares, make sure to pick up a CD or two - it’s all quality stuff.

In the meantime, Happy Holograms and Merry X-Men to all of you everypeople out there. The podcast is going to take the next couple of weeks off (so it can visit it’s relations, of course), but will return in the ‘06 to keep it happening. Thanks for listening and see ya in the new year!

Episode 15 - Satellite City & Mort Douce

For this episode, we highlight a couple of artists I’ve been needing to highlight for some time now. First off, we welcome Tony Miracle’s Satellite City project onto the podcast. I’ve been working under the impression that I featured a track of his (Playground:Rainstorm, which he was kind enough to contribute to the Area615 compilation) on a previous episode of the podcast… Upon further investigation, it appears that I did no such thing. Tony, my apologies to you - you should have been in the first episode! In order to make amends, I’ve mixed 4 tracks from his CD Travels for your enjoyment.

The second half is excerpted from a live set by Mort Douce, a dark deep listening artist from Poland whose aquaintance I’ve made via the Coil list. He has a new release entitled Another World that I’ve yet only heard the preview of - limited to 60 copies, I hope I’m able to get a hand on one. Fortune smiles on the humble engineer however, as he also has a live set (as well as an EP release) available on Aferecords.com - so, in the spirit of our podcast - enjoy the dark live goodness.

As always, listen away, support the artists, and feel free to comment away.

Satellite City - Interviews / Chalk Farm Road / Fifth Of May / Airshow
Mort Douce - Live @ Diuna Club 16.02.2005

Episode 14 - Fallback Tracks

No major theme this weekend, save that I’m playing some tracks from friends I’ve found in the blogosphere and on last.fm. The first half of our set is introduced with a snippet of abstract contact mic play from Miyazaki Shintaro, followed by a mix of two tracks each from Blue Vitriol, Kruhft and ArcTone. The second half of the set is from a live performance by melodic idm genius Ochre.

As always, there’s much more music where all of this comes from - go visit these artists sites for more. A special note about ArcTone - these tracks are from a new live CD which is now available for 1/2 off for the first 50 people to order the manual from Igloo Magazine. If you like what you hear, go forth and spend!

Miyazaki Shintaro - fadheit
Blue Vitriol - Re-Entry Dub
ArcTone - Deep n Fuse

Episode 13 - Makeoutsession 1

This week’s podcast is a svelte and sexy session from 4 (well, 3.5) incredible net.labels. If it’s getting as cold where you are as it is here at mission control, you’ll appreciate this soundtrack built to accompany you and your favorite companion as you embark on a strange and dangerous mission to raise the ambient temperature via body proximity. Take off those pressure suits and get cozy!

Later, after the sun rises again, make sure to visit Monotonik, Filtro and Thinner/Autoplate to download these releases, and many more besides.

Episode 12 - Neontotem / Pueblo Nuevo net.label

This week, we’re going in two different directions. The set starts with a broken hysterical noisy beat fest megamix from Neontotem, who I’ve been hassling to get me tracks for the podcast since day one. He gave me a coredump, I sorted it out. It should get your blood pumping a little. After that, we change gears to highlight the minimal techno sounds coming out of Santiago, Chile’s Pueblo Nuevo net.label. They’re fairly new on the scene, which lets me feature a track off of each of their releases, so far. If you like what you hear, head over there and download the full releases. Make sure to let them know what you think!

Tracks by Neontotem -

Episode 10 - Logickal Commits Gunpower Treason

This week I’m offering up an actual live set - recorded four days ago (Saturday Nov 5) at Buzz & Click 3 by yours truly. Like almost all of my live sets, it was improvised in real time using Ableton Live - for you AbletonGeeks out there, I used 1 Operator, 3 Impulses, 3 Simplers, a total of 5 abstract synth loops (three of which came from tracks on the new EP - which I hope to have posted very soon), three sends with Beat Repeat, Ping Pong and Grain Delays and 2 open audio tracks for resampling. I hope you enjoy it, and feel free to send an email or take advantage of the comments section if you have anything to say!

Episode 8 - Logickal Pays Tribute

Apologies for the lateness of the latest podcast. Seems like a conspiracy sometimes, you know?

Anyway, this is a special episode of FlightDynamics, where Logickal plows through his memory banks (and CD collection) to mine some of the tracks that were most influential to him when he was but a wee Space Cadet. However - don’t think for a second this is just another digital mix-tape. There are 11 individual track in this podcast, all of which are nearly all original compositions sourced exclusively from a track that was really important to me between the years of 1981 and 1991. They aren’t quite covers, and they aren’t quite remixes (well, a couple of them are closer to being straight remixes, but who’s counting?).

Here’s where the fun begins. Email me with your guesses as to the songs that are being paid tribute to here. Those who send the most correct answers can receive one of the following -

  • A podcast episode dedicated to their own music (or music they represent via their netlabel)- regardless of style.
  • A podcast curated by the winner - I can help put it together, or you can do the whole deal.
  • A free remix by Logickal of one of your tracks- with which you can do what you will..
  • A free Logickal CD, custom made right here from the studio.

Sound like fun? Email me with your guesses!

Episode 7 - The Village Orchestra

This time, a live set from The Village Orchestra (Ruaridh Law from The Marcia Blaine School for Girls) as performed on the Electromagnetic radio show on July 26 2005. Many, many thanks to Ruaridh for offering up his sets for re-transmission here. It includes material from his forthcoming CD due out on Highpoint Lowlife entitled Et In Arcadia Ego. Make sure to check it out and offer your support by handing over your hard earned dollars on this sure-to-be excellent release.

For those of you that dig on descriptions, this set is a very atmospheric-style idm mix, with nice electro drum crispness submerged among mutating synth pads, string swells and the occasional vocal break. The mood doesn’t stay in one place, with some nice James Brown spotting hiphopness creeping in later in the mix.
Here’s the tracklist:

In Arcadia (from forthcoming Et In Arcadia Ego album)
Many Rooms In My Fathers House (from EIAE)
What Time Is Made Of (from forthcoming Square Roots compilation 12″)
(Production Unit talks about Freemasonry)
Ruskia demo version 3 (unreleased)
(Agent Cooper/Chris Isaak)
Jacob / Bad Hand At Cards (from EIAE)
(William S Burroughs - Bradley the Buyer excerpt)
Right Wing Fear of Hiphop (unreleased)
Sudoku is the Opiate of the Middle Classes (unreleased)
(Inner City - Good Life)
Red Lever (from Stuff Records 003 compilation 12″)

Episode 6 - Conch (Live)

This week we welcome the first “touring act” at the FlightDynamics virual nightclub - Conch, who are artists after my own heart as far as performance is concerned, building their tracks with a distinct improvisational mindset.

Those of you prone to keeping up with the net IDM scene may have heard this streamed back on 04Sep on The Kids Are Bored. Very spacious, with beats that hearken me back to dreams of running a rave chillout room. Well suited for listening with low light levels. Imagine us all here, hedonistically reclining on our beanbag furniture in a blissfull haze, soft blue lights playing across the life support system control panels, spacesuits becoming optional. It’s a great gig, give it a listen.

Here’s info on the set from the artists:

Info on stream:
This excerpt of Conch’s recording was performed live and fully improvised at the Full Moon festival, 2005 in Germany. http://www.fullmoon-festival.de

Philosophy:
Conch is a collaboration project between Walter and Sebastian from www.the-well.nl and www.ArcTone.com respectively. Our mission is to explore possibilities and the imagination. As a live performance we make music ‘in the moment’ using a variety of tools, synthesizers, guitars, drum pads and other instruments to record, loop, layer, process and compose music in real-time. By following this creative principle we hope to bring a new breath of life in the art of contemporary performances.

Conch is currently working on a debut album entitled “Bubble”. Conch’s web site is: www.conch.nl

We’ll have another live set for next week, so make sure to check back! My Odeo Channel (odeo/54ee07327d7a2245)

Episode 5 - Netsoundmix 1a

FlightDynamics05_07Sep05.mp3

Here’s another DJ set for your ears. Do yourself a favor and follow the links to download more music by these oh-so-tasty artists. I don’t have a lot to say this week, other than to encourage everyone to donate even a small amount to the Red Cross for disaster relief and recovery. People need help, and it’s obvious that our Government isn’t doing jack. Send these people all the support you can - they need it badly.

Logickal - Broken Levee - PLEASE DONATE TO THE RED CROSS
Angina-P - Belladona D30
Jensen Sportag - JapaneseZombieSchoolgirls

Episode 4 - Maurice Syntax

First of all, all of our thoughts this week are going to the victims of Katarina. I can’t imagine the devastation, let alone the effects it has on the people who lived through it or have yet to return to their homes to find who-knows-what. We felt the tail end of her wrath here, as the first ever recorded Tropical Storm to hit Middle Tennessee. Nothing at all in comparison to the apocalypse visited on the Gulf Coast.

Busy this week working on a couple of remixes - one a remix for Danny Hyde’s Aural Rage remix CD competition. Danny was a longtime Coil collaborator who’se work with the band was a serious influence on me. Also completed a collaborative track with MSBR for a web-based tribute CD project for Steinklang Records. More detail on these soon.

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for - this week’s podcast. For this episode, we were able to convince Maurice Syntax to come out of his bedroom-cum-nighclub and provide us with a live set of tracks he’s working on for his forthcoming EP release. It reminds us of a bastard child of 1994 Orb and Vladislav Delay, but I’m not much of a critic. It’s great music for slacking, snogging or snacking, whichever you prefer. Since Maurice has no URL for more info yet and doesn’t check his email at all (the bohemian that he is), I’ll just tell you what he told me:

here is the set for your bog. the tracks aren’t done, right? hope you and people enjoy. let me know if the tasty girls ask for my email. tracks are - frida called a taxi / watt earp / fall at tinas / of course

So, there you have it - download away, and tell all the tasty girls you heard it here first.
