Episode 4 - Maurice Syntax

First of all, all of our thoughts this week are going to the victims of Katarina. I can’t imagine the devastation, let alone the effects it has on the people who lived through it or have yet to return to their homes to find who-knows-what. We felt the tail end of her wrath here, as the first ever recorded Tropical Storm to hit Middle Tennessee. Nothing at all in comparison to the apocalypse visited on the Gulf Coast.

Busy this week working on a couple of remixes - one a remix for Danny Hyde’s Aural Rage remix CD competition. Danny was a longtime Coil collaborator who’se work with the band was a serious influence on me. Also completed a collaborative track with MSBR for a web-based tribute CD project for Steinklang Records. More detail on these soon.

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for - this week’s podcast. For this episode, we were able to convince Maurice Syntax to come out of his bedroom-cum-nighclub and provide us with a live set of tracks he’s working on for his forthcoming EP release. It reminds us of a bastard child of 1994 Orb and Vladislav Delay, but I’m not much of a critic. It’s great music for slacking, snogging or snacking, whichever you prefer. Since Maurice has no URL for more info yet and doesn’t check his email at all (the bohemian that he is), I’ll just tell you what he told me:

here is the set for your bog. the tracks aren’t done, right? hope you and people enjoy. let me know if the tasty girls ask for my email. tracks are - frida called a taxi / watt earp / fall at tinas / of course

So, there you have it - download away, and tell all the tasty girls you heard it here first.

Episode 3 - Koji Tano RIP

flightdynamics03_24Aug05.mp3

This is a very special episode, where we pay tribute to one of the leaders of Japanese electronic noise - Koji Tano, known worldwide his musical work by MSBR. I count myself fortunate to even have a friend who was a friend of Koji’s, as he worked tirelessly to further experimental music worldwide. The podcast is comprised of unreleased concert recordings of Koji made between 2000-2001 by John Sharp while touring Europe. These performances are found here in excerpted form, and can be found in their entirety at http://www.glkweb.com/msbr/, along with a number of photos taken during tours and performances. You can also visit Lasse Marhaug’s excellent site to read the obituary he wrote for his friend.

Episode 2 - Orbits 615 and Beyond

FlightDynamics02_17Aug05.mp3

For this second installment of the podast, I put my DJ gloves on to bring you a short set of tunes from a bunch of people we’re friendly with. Mr. Natrural, Jensen Sportag and Fognode are fellow Nashvillian artists who help make the town (and the rest of the world) a better place. R_Garcia, Doofgoblin and Plat were all welcome visitors to Nashvegas as they pulled through on tour. Xenlab and Beak were among the first to pimp their wares to me after I announced the podcast. Thanks to all of them, and I hope you all enjoy. To find out more about them, click the links in the playlist below.

This week’s set is in the trusty MP3 format encoded at 128k VBR. I am experimenting with iTunes tags this time around, so let me know how those work.

The MSBR tribute set should be coming next week, and there are a bunch of ideas floating around for future episodes. Again, drop a line to give feedback or let me know of something I need to play or feature here! Any and all work will be considered, and would love to feature some live performances, whether whole or in excerpts.

Episode 1 - Pilot

Flight Dynamics Episode 1

The first installment of the Offnominal Podcast is now available. For this pilot episode, I’ve made a live mix of two previously recorded rehearsals, taking the best segments of each and molding them into a new composite piece entitled FlightDynamics Suite, separated into individual movements in the best prog-rock style. Following on from that are Cfmmmmmma, one of my many excursions into Time Machines-style drones and Ashen, a rough mix of a track culled from the 30 or so currently in process.

Please note that I have made the decision to be biased towards iTunes users, utilizing the AAC format and using the chapter functions to divide the tracks. However, I’ve since come to find that the current version of Wordpress does not support easy podcasting of these files, I’m open to input. I’m a slave to convenience, I admit.

To subscribe, simply use the RSS2.0 feed, found at the bottom of the page, or here.

While this pilot episode (there’s a pun in there somewhere) is Logickal-centric, I want to go ahead and say that the format of the podcast is going to be very freeform. On the one hand, I want to use it as a surrogate for live performance, and I intend to have occasional shows created in the same manner as my live performances - totally improvised long-form compositions, as opposed to the “live mix” style employed here. I also plan on pulling in as many friends as I can into the studio to help out with the show, and sometimes it will follow a more standard radio-esque format. I’m going to be hunting down tracks from artists on the web to feature in installments of this kind, so if you have some music that you think would fit, make sure to get in touch and let me know where to find them.

Production notes: Episode 1 was compiled live using Ableton Live 5.0, with some small assistance from Native Instruments Reaktor5 and Spektral Delay. Logickal was performed by Jeremy Dickens. Special guest introductory voice over by Chance Dickens. Get in touch if you have any questions or comments and thanks for listening!
