10 Minutes

What a great weekend… I know there are a few people waiting for me to post the screencast of my presentation at the Nashville Ableton User’s Group, but it DEFINITELY needs some editing. I also need to render off my set from Ombi Friday night. In the meantime, here’s a treat for everyone. Motivated by the length of time he can spend in his unarirconditioned office, Chris Randall over at Analog Industries challenged us to create a track in under 10 minutes, from soup to nuts. Inspired by Friday’s sessions, I ended up going through the process twice, creating screencasts of each one. In fact, a lot of the things I covered in the user’s group meeting are demonstrated here as well. I should note that it should be a given that I want a copy of their new plug in, Automaton.

So without further ado, I present two off-kilter hymns to last night’s full moon: Fullmoonskeever and Fullmoonmachines.

Weekenders and a little bit of music.

Nashville area robots: Tomorrow (Friday 8/15) I’m going to be out on the town doing a couple of events! First off, I will be presenting at the Nashville Ableton Live User’s Group at SAE starting at 6PM. I’ll be talking about using Live for performance from DJ-based sets to total sequencing improv. I’m thinking about also delving into some Racks/Drum Racks/Slicing fun.

Afterwards, I’ve been invited to do a set at Forward>>, taking place at 10PM at Ombi on Elliston Place. I was originally planning to do a DJ set, but the flyer says I’m doing a performance, so I might be going all out… There’s no cover, so be there!

In the meantime, here’s a bit of music for you… CDM wrote up a bit on a newish Mac-based generative music application called Nodal. My friend Vlad at Daevlmakr.com turned me on to this some time ago, and I tinkered a bit. I’ve not had the time to get incredibly deep, but I was prompted (via Twitter) to go back and play around a little bit more. This piece was created with Live, where Midi clips were created from the output of Nodal, with a little bit of Follow Actions thrown in for good measure. Hope you enjoy it…

Flight Dynamics 043 - World Tibet Day

In celebration of the 73rd birthday of Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, today was observed as World Tibet Day. I could ramble on and on about the need for the world as a whole (and the West in particular) to hold China accountable for their many human rights violations, of which the struggle of the Tibetan people is only a part. I will refrain from ranting, and instead offer this podcast of a live remix I performed today of Chantaction, which will see release on July 22, on the 4-track Tibetanaction single.

20080115 - Ground Fog / Crossed Swords

Recorded by Logickal the morning of Saturday, January 12, 2008. Improvisation built entirely from triggered sine-wave synth notes that begin the piece, permutated using Live’s Sampler instrument and Follow Actions. Featuring a cameo appearance from some of the Daevl.Plugs for good measure. The structure of the piece flows through the permutations in a fairly linear manner.

Episode 41 - Season’s Greetings

In a little over 15 minutes local time, it will be Xmas. So, from me to all of you - here is an improvised Carol, a subliminal hymn. It may be a little darker in tone than the usual “Peace on Earth,” but you know that is implied. The Solstice just passed means our days will start getting a little longer, even though it’s bound to be colder still.

Enjoy - if I don’t talk to you sooner, have a happy new year!

Episode 40 - Logickal Buzzes In, Clicks Out

Some of you may recall that this past weekend was the fifth installment of that annual festival of the Nashdiggity’s finest electronic noise, Buzz and Click. A wonderful time was had by all… thanks to all of the other performers for putting on such great sets.

It is my normal custom to record all of my sets - unfortunately, this night I was most of the way through my set before I realized I hadn’t started recording… So, I present to you a compilation of rehearsal takes made on Friday and Saturday (12/7 and 12/8), closing out with the last 8 minutes or so from the Buzz and Click performance itself.

Episode 39 - Phreak it

I’ve missed you. I really have. Sorry I haven’t been communicating like I used to do, but you know how it is. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to stop in, say hi, play some tunes. Here, tell ya what - how about I play some for you now? I recorded this just for you - yeah, at Daniel’s Phreaknic room party. We had a good time - does it show?

Episode 38-Global Day of Action

Today was the Global Day of Action for Burma. If you’ve been following the blog for the past couple of weeks, you might have picked up on the fact that I’ve been following the protests in Burma rather closely. As it happens, I’ve been recording material over the past two weeks, and am preparing a CD release in the next few days to support the Burmese people in their struggle to gain freedom from the oppression of the military dictatorship that has ruthlessly suppressed the peaceful demonstrations led by the Therevada Buddhist monks over the last weeks. I can’t stand with them directly, and have little to offer - but all proceeds from this release will be donated directly to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.

In this podcast, listen to a short mix of selections from the upcoming release Twelve Offerings to Burma. Please check back in the next few days for information about ordering this release and contributing to a worthy cause.
